Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Review

I’m a long-time Mac user (first Mac, a 512+). Eventually, like many Mac users, I drifted over to MS Word (MacWrite, WordPerfect, then Word). It works so well, it becomes the standard by which you compare other programs.

My need for this particular upgrade was that pesky docx! Those PC users smugly told me that I should upgrade. Initially, that meant getting the MS patch for Mac Office 2004 (right date?) users. I was accused of being a “Luddite” for asking for documents to be sent in an earlier version compatible with both the newest Word for PC and the older Word for Macs! [Note: if you didn't have the latest OS for Mac, the patch wouldn't work.]

Thank goodness for MS Office 2008 for Mac.

My primary MS Office uses are word processing (95%), PowerPoint (4%), and Excel (1%). Thus, my real concern was whether this 2008 edition made my life easy or harder.

Easier, hands down. I can open those docx documents. I can open all my older documents (dating WAY back). I can open up newer ppt files.

I think, if you were a more sophisticated user, using all the bells and whistles, you’d appreciate the subtle upgrades more than me. I’m a blue-collar user, using it 1000+ times a year, but really relying on spell check, word count, track changes, font size and style, and a few more options. I used to use PageMaker a lot, then started doing simple newsletters with Word; now I don’t even do those. Email, social network sites, and shared document sites have replaced that need.

Bottom line? I like it. And I really like the continuation of that auto update check. Keep it up, MS!
